Week 2 Story

The year is 2020. Angela and her three daughters Sarah, Emily, and Ruth are relaxing by their pool on a hot Saturday afternoon. They all drink some water to cool down and hydrate when all of a sudden the oldest daughter Sarah mentions how although she loves water, nothing quite hits the spot like lemonade. Angela nods in agreement and volunteers to go buy some in the city and bring it back for everyone to drink. Emily, the middle child, volunteers to go with her but Angela insists that they all stay and relax while she makes the quick trip. Before she leaves, she asks the girls if there is anything else she can get for them while she's out in the city. Ruth is scrolling through Instagram when she sees an add for Joe's Roses that catches her attention. She tells Angela that she wants her to bring back three roses. All of the women give her a confused look but Angela writes the request down and leaves for the city. As Angela enters the city she struggles to find the local market to purchase the lemonade. Her phone has died so she is also unable to navigate the GPS features. As she drives around she sees a Joe's Roses and realizes she will eventually need to go there anyway so she stops by and goes in the store. As she walks in she realizes that the founder himself, Joe Thompson is in the store and is also the only employee present. She is immediately star-struck and musters up the courage to start a conversation with Joe and tells him how she has been a huge fan of his store for years. She is still mentally shaken because Joe is practically known as a local celebrity. She grabs the three roses Ruth asked for and heads for the exit when suddenly an alarm goes off. She forgot to pay. Joe becomes extremely agitated and accuses her of trying to steal from the store. Angela is now beside herself with embarrassment, remorse and concern. He claims to have come across customers like her before and tells her to wait while he calls the police. Angela, terrified, calls Ruth and asks her to come to the scene to vouch for her character and help clear up the situation. Ruth, who knows how to navigate the city seamlessly arrives within minutes. Joe is stunned by Ruth's beauty and his entire demeanor changes as she enters the store. He admits that police really won't be necessary and calls them off. He and Ruth start up an engaging conversation and realize that they have a great amount in common. They even start flirting until Angela interrupts and asks if they are free to go. Joe snaps out of his trance and says that the roses are on him as long as he can get Ruth's contact information. Ruth blushes and gives him her snap chat, "@RuthlessQueen". The mother and daughter tandem exit the city with the roses and return to the other two girls who are still working on their tan. After filling in Emily and Sarah in on what happened, Emily finally asks Ruth why she wanted the three roses. Ruth replied that there is nothing more that she cherishes than spending time with her sisters and mom, handing the roses to them and embracing them with an emotional hug. Sarah, with tears in here eyes asks Angela and Ruth where the lemonade is. Just then Ruth receives a snap chat from Joe, he wants to take her on a date. The pair would continue to go on more dates. Ruth even joined Joe's rose company as the advertising lead with social media. This relationship continued and led to a great wedding with all of their friends, family, and overwhelming amounts of lemonade.

Author's Note:
I started with the the basic concept of Beauty and the Basilisk, which was a great story already. As I read the original I felt like there were certain point that never quite paid off like the significance of the three roses. Also confusing details like why was the basilisk's head replaced by a serpent's head after being decapitated instead of just reverting straight to the prince.

  1. Hi, Donovan.

  2. Hi Donovan! What a cool take on this story. You did a great job with taking such a classic tale, like Beauty and the Basilisk, and making it someday that the reader could understand in the modern world. I especially liked how you incorporated the Instagram ads into the story. This is something that most of us encounter every day, so it was an awesome touch to add to you modern day story. I wonder why Angela is so starstruck by Joe? Is he just a local flower shop owner, and Angela has just been following his business for a long time? It would be interesting to know more about his significance. Like if Angela thought he was handsome in commercials, or something like that. Lastly, while the content of the story was well-written and fun to read, the formatting made this a little difficult. You might try to separate the story into multiple paragraphs to make it a little easier to read.

  3. Hey Donovan! This was a great modern retelling of The Three Roses. In particular, I liked how you incorporated social media like Instagram and Snapchat throughout the story. Social media is such a big part of our lives today that most modern retellings without a hint of it seem remiss. I also thought it was cute how Ruth ended up becoming the advertising lead for Joe! As I was reading about Angela's starstruck attitude towards Joe, I was wondering what exactly made him a local celebrity? Was he wildly successful? Or was he extremely handsome? Maybe both? I think some clarification on that front would have given us a better insight into Angela's reaction to Joe. Next time, you might try spacing out the story into different paragraphs to make it easier to read. What if you also tried adding dialogue? I think dialogue is also a fun way to learn more about the characters and it can be entertaining for the reader!
