Week 5 Story: The Green Earring

There once was a wealthy and powerful prince named prince Lock. Prince Lock was grieving from the sudden and unexpected passing of his closest friend Theo several months ago. Prince Lock was an extremely kind and affable person, so naturally he had many friends, but none of them could quite match or surpass the bond that he and Theo had. Lock's adviser noticed that the young prince had been in a melancholy mood and suggested that he take all of his closest friends to his lake house for a weekend full of fun that would get his mind off of things and remind him of how great his life still was. Lock loved this idea and invited all of his closest friends as well as some family to his overwhelmingly great lake house for the weekend. The weekend was going perfectly, one of his great friends John, had traveled more than 24 hours to be there and brought his wife Sarah with him. The group of fifteen was on Lock's yacht amidst the lake when the yacht caught an unexpected wave and jerked violently. No one was injured but after tending to everyone Lock noticed that Sarah appeared upset. Apparently she had taken her earrings off and was about to put them in her purse when the yacht jerked, causing her to drop them into the deep lake. Lock sent some of his best assistants to search the Lake but they were  unable to find it within several hours, but promised to continue to look until they found them. Lock was one of the most opulent men in the world and assured her that he would replace the earrings with new earrings that would be more luxurious and beautiful. Sarah handled the entire incident with grace, but it was evident that she was still upset. She explained to everyone that those earrings were the last things she had to remember her grandmother by. Days past and Lock traveled more than 24 hours to deliver the most beautiful and expensive earrings anyone had ever seen to Sarah and John. She and John were both overwhelmed by this expensive gift and tried to refuse but Lock insisted they accept the gift. Lock's weekend getaway with his friends had been a huge success, despite this event. Lock was back to his normal self and as he gave the earrings to Sarah he asked her if she still wanted his assistants to keep searching the lake. She looked at her husband John and then gently nodded her head yes to Lock. Lock now understood the importance of those earrings to Sarah. He returned home where he relayed the message to his adviser. His adviser was confused and irritated that Sarah was still concerned about the cheaper pair of earrings. Lock disregarded his advisor's comments and made sure that the search continued. Lock muttered about how it takes awhile to get over things lost, and continued on with his day.

Author's Note: I took the story of the green Jewel and added my own flair. In the original story, a prince is also feeling down and takes a trip with his friends because of advice from his advisor. The main difference is that in the original, when the woman dropped her jewel in the body of water, the chief scribe used a spell to retrieve the jewel which was received with great gratitude. The story originally ended with the king and his peers being greatly impressed and pleased by the chief scribe's actions.

  1. I really like how you made the made connection between Sarah losing her grandmother's earrings and Lock losing his friend. When you lose something or someone, so important to you, it takes time move on. You can't just replace them with bigger, grander, more expensive things. His adviser didn't get that. I appreciate how committed Lock was to retrieving Sarah's earrings understanding how it feels to lose someone close to you.

If I had one suggestion, it would be that maybe instead of simply disregarding the adviser's comment and muttering to himself, you could have Lock explain this to his adviser. And maybe then he could have a change of heart and personally see that the search for the earrings continued.

  2. Hi Donovan!
I really like your retelling of this story. I especially liked your subtle comparison between Sarah losing her grandmother's earrings to Prince Lock losing his friend Theo. I felt like you did a good job illustrating the difficulty of loss through the telling of Sarah's emotions and expressions. I wonder what would have happened if you had included the discovery (or lack thereof) of the earrings and maybe provided some closure for Prince Lock. Overall, great job with this story!!

  3. Hey Donovan!

You did a great job with this story. I liked how you developed the character of Prince Lock. He seemed to handle his grief in an admirable way. I would have enjoyed getting more clarity at the end of your story on what happens with the search. Overall this retelling was creative and full of interesting descriptions. I enjoyed the way you framed Sarah's desire for the search to continue even after she was gifted with a new ring. Nicely done!
