Reading Notes: Sinbad, Part A

First Voyage

  • Wealthy
  • sold his goods
  • sailed towards the East Indies.
  • Explored a small island on the way
  • Turned out to be the back of a sleeping whale, not an island.
  • He was left at sea
  • Found an island with people who gave him food and planned on leaving soon.

First Voyage (cont)

  • Reunited with his old crew after seeing a sailor load possessions labeled with his name.
  • He then bought his own house, reunited with family.

Second Voyage

  • Goes out to sea again
  • Falls asleep
  • In a deep and narrow valley
  • Snakes surrounded him but they only came out during the day.
  • Slept in a Cave
  • Something fell to the ground with a thud beside him.

Second Voyage (cont.)

  • Lured a bird with a diamond to drop him into its nest
  • His crew found him and they ventured to Bagdad. 

Third Voyage

  • Set sail yet again out of boredom
  • Came across savages
  • Found various herbs and fruits
  • Encountered a giant who captured them

Third Voyage(cont.)

  • The giant approached them with two more giants
  • Escaped from the Giant only to have is friend eaten by a giant snake

Third Voyage(end)

  • Grabbed the attention of a nearby crew
  • Rescued and returned to Balsora

Fourth Voyage

  • Encountered savages after going on another adventure.
  • It became apparent that the savages were cannibals.
  • Showed them how to ride horses with bridle/stirrups

Fourth Voyage(cont.)

  • The king told Sinbad he would find him a beautiful wife.
  • Sinbad's neighbor died
  • Sinbad's wife also died


Fourth Voyage(end)

  • Sinbad is close to starving
  • Killed and ate an animal.
  • Returned to Bagdad with riches from his adventure.
